PRIMARY PURPOSE OF ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: The Legal Division provides legal representation, counsel, training and support to the Department.  The Agency Attorney works with all areas within the agency providing legal interpretation of statutes, guidelines, policies and legal documents; advises on litigation and Human Resource matters; and represents the County or Agency in court.  Ninety (90%) percent of the matters arise in four areas within the Department; Child Protective Services, Child Support, Adult Protective Services and Legal Training and Document Interpretation.
PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:  The OA-III in this position is assigned to the Legal Division located on the Ground Floor of the Department of Social Services.  Duties for this position are listed but not limited to the following:  Preparation of Motions, Petitions, Order, Notices, Subpoenas; Filing of Juvenile Petitions including coordinating with Social Workers to get information, drafting documents, making copies, taking documents to court for filing; Filing of annual and final accountings to the Clerk of Court for all General and Estate Wards; Research of Juvenile and Child Support documents with the Clerk of Court, Distributing court reports to local Attorneys for their review before Juvenile court; All witness coordination including obtaining witness lists from Social Work Staff, issuing subpoenas and letters and then follow up with witnesses regarding court dates and other duties as assigned by the Agency Attorney which may include incoming calls, drafting letters and mail.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS and ABILITIES:  General knowledge of office or work unit procedures, methods and practices.  General knowledge of and ability to use correct spelling, punctuation and specialized vocabulary; ability to proofread.  General knowledge of office accounting and record keeping procedures, mathematics and their application in the work environment.  Ability to learn and apply a variety of guidelines applicable to the work process.  Ability to use a variety of office equipment.  Ability to work with people with courtesy and tact in performing public contact duties.  Ability to record and compile information based on general guidelines.  Ability to balance and reconcile figures.  Ability to screen communications based on predetermined guidelines.  Ability to gather and give information and instructions regarding the work process and procedures.  Ability to learn to use specialized office equipment..  May require ability to coordinate work of other support staff, student workers and volunteers.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:  Graduation from high school and demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills and abilities gained through at least one year of office assistant/secretarial experience; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.
TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:  Experience with Windows and Excel preferred.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must have NC Driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
