Primary Purpose of the Position:

Work is performed under direct supervision of the on duty Shift Supervisor, or general supervision of the facility Command Staff.  The Detention Officer is responsible for maintaining a secure facility and the safe custody of inmates housed within the Haywood County Detention Center.  This employee performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks associated with the Detention Center operations and incarceration of inmates.

Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:

Supervise and control inmate behavior during the day to day operation of the Detention Center

Restrain by force if necessary using the appropriate restraints

Exercise appropriate judgment in the handling of special needs and situations concerning inmates

Assist in classification of inmates

Performs searches of inmates, vehicles, mail, objects capable of concealing contraband, buildings, as well as indoor and outdoor areas

Administer basic emergency first aid (when required and/or needed)

Transport or escort inmates (hostile, aggressive, passive, etc.) using handcuffs and other approved restraints in accordance to policy and procedure

Maintain equipment and uniforms in good condition

Maintain inmate property and storage

Collect, resolve inmate complaints, grievances or requests

Perform related duties and other responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State and Local laws.  Knowledge of the principles, methods and techniques of investigation including gathering, preservation of evidence.  Knowledge of modern office practices, methods and computer equipment.  Knowledge of principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting procedures.  Knowledge of procedures, methods and techniques of basic first aid and CPR.  Knowledge of safe driving principles and practices.

Ability to apply knowledge and reasoning to make prompt effective decisions quickly in both routine and non-routine situations.  Possess ability to make sound decisions in a timely manner; to size up a situation and quickly take the appropriate action.  Ability to write clearly and concisely; to utilize proper grammar, punctuation and spelling; Ability to write reports which are organized, complete, accurate and factual.  Ability to adapt to changes in working conditions, assignments and shifts.  Ability to proceed with assignments independently and willingness to improve upon skills required for the position.  Possess the ability to maintain a high degree of personal and professional honesty and integrity.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires high school diploma, GED or specialized vocational training.  Requires over three months work experience and up to and including six months.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Detention Officer, CPR and First Aid certification.  Required training will be scheduled for new employees.
