General Description of Position:

The purpose of this position is to plan, supervise and participate in the activities and operations of the Animal Control Services Department.  The position will enforce state and local laws and ordinances governing the care and keeping of domestic animals and livestock with an effort to maintain public safety and welfare.

Essential Tasks of this position:

  • Supervises assigned staff
  • Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed or required.
  • Assists in the development of the department budget.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and modification as necessary or required of all department policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the daily operations of the Haywood County Animal Services shelter.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities of the Animal Services Director in the event of his/her absence.
  • Investigates complaints of dogs, cats or other animals creating nuisances and takes appropriate action.
  • Assists law enforcement personnel in situations involving animals as needed or required.
  • Performs routine administrative/clerical duties as required, including but not limited to conducting and attending meetings, preparing forms, reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the phone, copying and filing documents, etc.
  • Attends training, meetings, workshops, etc. as necessary to maintain job knowledge, skills and required certifications.

Work Hours and Benefits:

This is a full time position with Haywood County Animal Services.  Hours of work are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and will include an on call rotation week working hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m. although hours may vary depending upon work load.

Required Minimum Training:

Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by formal training, special courses of self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training in animal control, law enforcement or a closely related field.


Special Certifications:

Must possess a valid NC Driver's license.  Current DMV record should show no more than three (3) points on record.  Must completed required animal control coursework and possess Animal Control Officer I and animal tranquilizer capture.


Experience Requirements:

Requires three (3) years or more experience in an animal related, law enforcement or closely related field.


The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal background check.
