Summer reading program Print

It's time to begin the Summer Reading Program!

Summer is here and that means it’s time for the Haywood County Public Library’s Summer Reading Program! This year’s theme is Make a Splash—Read!

What is summer reading and how does it work? Register for our summer reading program at our kick-off party or anytime during the month of June. Children of all ages (up to 16) can register.

Readers and pre-readers are welcome to participate. You’ll receive a reading log to record the titles of the books you read this summer. Set a personal reading goal and sign a contract with the librarian. Complete the program by reading for at least 30 days this summer and by reading at least 4 books at your reading level. Participants who complete the program will be eligible for prizes from local businesses.

Hold on to your reading records, too, because your teacher or school librarian may have a reward for you when school starts! Waynesville Middle School students who turn in a signed reading record to their language arts teachers in August, will be invited to an ice cream party in the school media center. Some teachers give homework passes, class parties or free books, some schools have a drawing for a grand prize. Prizes and rewards vary, but at the very least you will impress your teacher with the list of books you read during your summer break.

Remember, we have lots of fun programs this summer at the library. A complete list of scheduled summer reading programs is available at our website: www.haywoodlibrary.org  or you can pick up a printed calendar of events at the circulation desk.

All the entertainment, snacks and incentives are generously provided by the Friends of the Haywood County Public Library. Yay, Friends!

The best reward is the reading. We have John Grisham’s first ever children’s novel: Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer and Percy Jackson and the New Olympians series by Rick Riordan, The 39 Clues series and many more wonderful books for you to discover. Ramona: The Movie is coming out July 23, so come in now to re-read all your favorite Beverly Cleary books. Need exciting non-fiction? Spend the summer with The Dangerous Book for Boys and see what family fun you can have!

Be sure to visit the Waynesville library often and tell us what you're reading. If you're on track to meeting your reading goal, we have cool cups, flying frogs, temporary tattoos and stickers for you. And more great books! Happy reading!
