Fire, Rescue personnel gear up for 1st Haywood Expo Print

The first annual Fire and Rescue Expo will be held Friday, Aug. 27th through Sunday, August 29th at Haywood Community College.

This new event for Haywood County is expected to draw more than 200 fire and rescue personnel from around the state and nation for classes ranging from Fire Behavior and SMART Triage to basic pump operations and Agricultural Rescue. In addition, participants with have an opportunity to meet with vendors showing the latest models of trucks, protective equipment and other gear now available on the market.

“It’s going to be a great event, because it gives our local personnel a chance to train with fire and rescue personnel from other areas,” said Dee Massey, Fire Services Coordinator with Haywood Community College.

“An expo also brings in instructors from around the state, and vendors who will show the latest available equipment. Folks will be able to take what they learn in class, and meet with vendors to get a first-hand look at equipment.”

Massey said he is hopeful that the event will also be a boost to the local economy because expo participants will stay in local hotels and visit local restaurants and other businesses.

The cost to enroll in the Fire and Rescue Expo is $25 for North Carolina Fire, Rescue and Law Enforcement personnel, and $65 for out-of-state personnel. Registration opens at 5 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 27, and the first class begins at 6 p.m. Classes will continue on Saturday and Sunday.

The minimum age for participants in the Fire & Rescue Expo is 16 years old. All participants between the ages of 16 and 18 must have written permission from their high school principal. A High School Release form or letter must be returned with the registration form.
