Tarp Day to promote covering your cargo Print

Take your truck to the Haywood County Materials Recovery Facility on Thursday, June 16, and you’ll get some good advice on how to keep our highways cleaner and safer. You may even drive away with a free tarp.

Haywood County is one of 23 counties participating in a new Tarp Awareness campaign sponsored by Keep NC Beautiful and the NC Department of Transportation. The goal of the campaign is to remind drivers to properly secure cargo in truck beds to prevent accidents and reduce roadside litter.

The campaign will also reinforce NC General Statute 14-399, which makes it illegal to haul an improperly secured load and can result in a $2,000 fine, community service work and one point on a motorist’s driver license upon conviction.

“Litter from uncovered trucks is an ongoing problem, we see it every day,” said Stephen King, Haywood County Solid Waste Director. “This will be a day for education, not punishment. Reminding Haywood County citizens how to make covering truck loads a habit will help everyone take responsibility for the cleanliness of our community and will keep unintentional litter from plaguing our roadsides.”

The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to provide education fliers to truck owners and to answer questions about the law. The Materials Recovery Facility is located on Recycle Road in Clyde. Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Tarps will be available as long as supplies last. For more information, contact the Haywood County Solid Waste Department at 828-627-8042.
