State Public Health to hold Benfield meeting Dec. 2 Print

The Health Assessment, Consultation and Evaluation Program of the North Carolina Division of Public Health (DPH) will hold a public availability session from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 2, 2010 regarding the Public Health Assessment completed for the former Benfield Industries NPL Site in Waynesville, NC.

Representatives from DPH will be available to answer questions about the results of their evaluation. The public availability session will be held at the Haywood Vocational Opportunities building on 172 Riverbend Street in Waynesville. Community residents are encouraged to stop by at any time between those hours.

Benfield Industries, Inc. was a bulk chemical mixing and repackaging facility that operated on the site from 1976 until 1982. In 1989, the site was added to the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Priorities List program. Soil and groundwater contamination with a variety of organic substances were identified at the site. Active soil and groundwater cleanup activities began at the site in 1997 and ended in 2007.

In 2002, Haywood Vocational Opportunities, Inc. bought the property and completed the redevelopment of the site in 2004. As part of EPA’s ongoing oversight, there is continued monitoring of the groundwater. The N.C. Division of Public Health reviewed environmental data obtained from 1990 through 2008 in a Public Health Assessment document and sample data obtained in February 2010 in a Letter Health Consultation.

Representatives from DPH will be available to answer questions about these evaluations during the public availability session. Community members interested in additional information should contact Mercedes Hernández-Pelletier, HACE Program’s health educator at 919-707-5900.
