The public is invited to the third and final meeting on the design of a proposed County Sports Park in Jonathan Valley at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 27 at Maggie Valley Town Hall in Maggie Valley.

The purpose of this public meeting is to present a draft of a Site Master Plan for a proposed County Sports Park in Jonathan Valley, based on input from the previous two public meetings and online surveys. Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon, the consultant team for the park design, will facilitate the meeting.

Following Tuesday’s meeting, BWSC will take the public input and complete the final draft of the Master Plan, including costs, for presentation to the Board of County Commissioners on May 17. While no county funds are currently available to begin the project, completion and approval of the Master Plan for the Sports Park will help position the County to apply for grants for the development of the facility.

The cost of developing the Site Master Plan was $14,950. The plan was paid for by revenues generated by a lease the County currently has on the property, and by $10,000 approved by the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority from occupancy tax collections in the Maggie Valley and Waynesville areas. The TDA Zip Code Subcommittees for Maggie Valley and Waynesville each recommended $5,000 toward the project.

BWSC previously worked with Haywood County and the municipalities to prepare a Comprehensive System-wide Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which was approved in March 2007. Recreation opportunities in the Jonathan Creek area was one of the needs identified in the Master Plan.
