Citizens will have the first of three opportunities to weigh in on the design of a proposed County Sports Park in Jonathan Valley at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 4 at the Haywood County Office Building located at 81 Elmwood Way in Waynesville.

Barge, Waggoner, Sumner & Cannon, the consultant team for the park design, will facilitate the meeting and explain the planning process, present findings from a site inventory and analysis, and solicit public input on possible program elements at the site.

BWSC previously worked with Haywood County and the municipalities to prepare a Comprehensive System-wide Parks and Recreation Master Plan, which was approved in March 2007. Recreation opportunities in the Jonathan Creek area was one of the needs identified in the Master Plan. The cost of developing the Site Master Plan will be $14,950. The plan is being paid for by revenues generated by a lease the County currently has on the property, and by $10,000 approved by the Haywood County Tourism Development Authority from occupancy tax collections in the Maggie Valley and Waynesville areas. The TDA Zip Code Subcommittees for Maggie Valley and Waynesville each recommended $5,000 toward the project.

Following this meeting, BWSC will develop an interim report with up to three conceptual master plans to present to the Recreation Board in March. A second public meeting on the Master Plan options will be held at 6 p.m., Thursday, March 25, also at the County Office Building.

From there, BWSC will produce a draft final plan that includes the preferred park diagram with cost estimates, to present to the Recreation Board in April. The third and final public meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, April 27 at Maggie Valley Town Hall.
