Information Regarding the Advertisement of Tax Liens

The 2008 real estate taxes became past due on January 6, 2009.  North Carolina General Statutes require tax collectors to advertise current year unpaid taxes on real estate each year.  While we do not intend to embarrass the property owners by the advertisement of unpaid taxes it is the beginning of the foreclosure process. 

The advertisement contains the names of the property owners with unpaid 2008 real estate taxes.  The second part of the advertisement lists property that was split or merged during 2008.   The advertisement reflects payments made as of May 27, 2009 .

 

This office will begin using bank attachments, wage garnishments and levy of personal property for current year taxes that also include personal property and motor vehicles.  Foreclosed properties will incur attorney’s fees, mail and publication costs that will be added to the tax amount owed.

 

We do not want to nor do we like to use enforced collection to collect taxes owed but out of fairness to all citizens of Haywood County, we must collect all taxes owed.

 

Advertisement of Tax Liens on Real Property for the year 2008
Under and by virtue of the authority vested in me Section 105-369 of the North Carolina General Statutes and pursuant to an order by the Board of Commissioners of Haywood County dated the 2nd day of February 2009, I am hereby advertising tax liens for the year 2008 upon real estate described below. The amount advertised will be increased by interest and costs, and the omission of interest and cost from the amount advertised will not constitute a wavier of the taxing unit’s claim for those items. The real estate that is subject to the lien, the name of the person to whom the property is listed for taxes and the principal amount of the taxes are set out below. If the taxes remain unpaid after this advertisement is completed, the lien will be foreclosed by the taxing unit and the property sold to satisfy the taxing unit’s claim for taxes. This the 1st day of June 2009.
