POSITION #187-68-301 PRIMARY PURPOSE OF ORGANIZATIONAL UNIT: The Haywóod County Meals on Wheels program provides hot, nutritious meals, five days a week to elderly, disabled and/or homebound clients who are unable to prepare such a meal themselves or have no one available to prepare these meals for them. PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: The primary purpose of this position is to direct, manage, supervise and assist with the preparation, packaging and delivery of approximately 250 + meals, five days per week to elderly, disabled and/or homebound clients located in their own homes or adult day care/day health centers. In addition, childcare centers are also served on a contract basis. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Community Resource Unit Supervisor. KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS and ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of the methods of preparing meats and vegetables in quantity lots. Thorough knowledge of the cooking times and temperature of various foods and methods of preserving their flavor and food value. Considerable knowledge of the principles of personal and food sanitation. General knowledge of the methods and materials used in the baking of breads and the preparation of desserts. General knowledge of the uses of leftover foods and methods of combining these with other ingredients. Ability to estimate food needs for a relatively large number of persons and to requisition needed food items. Ability to instruct subordinate personnel in proper food preparation and serving methods and to plan effective work methods in a kitchen. Ability to maintain routine records of food used and quantities needed for varying numbers of persons. Ability to maintain kitchen and other working areas in a clean and sanitary condition. 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Must be a high school graduate. One year of experience in food preparation or service activities in a large commercial or institutional kitchen OR equivalent combination of education and experience. Must successfully complete and pass the BASIC SANITATION WORKSHOP offered by Environmental Health.

 

TRAINING/EXPERIENCE: Ongoing education and training are strongly encouraged within the Agency.

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must submit official college transcripts. Must have NC Driver’s license and access to a vehicle.
