General Description of Position


The purpose of the position is to supervise workers and oversee maintenance of all county buildings, facilities, and grounds.  The position is responsible for supervision, oversight of preventive and corrective maintenance, budgets, department administration, and reports.  The position plans, organizes, and implements programs within major organizational policies; reports progress of major activities to executive level administrators through reports and conferences.


Essential Tasks

 The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class.  Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary. 

Plans, assigns and supervises the general maintenance of County buildings, facilities and grounds.


Develops and administers the department budget; ensures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time; prepares financial reports and forms as required.


Supervises assigned maintenance personnel; supervisory duties include instructing, assigning and reviewing work of others, maintaining standards, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, recommending and approving employee discipline, and recommending discharge as appropriate. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers advice and assistance as needed.


Coordinates and participates in the training of department staff.


Establishes maintenance standards and schedules.


Establishes and maintains an efficient work order system; receives and supervises the timely completion of all work orders.


Serves as project manager for major and minor building construction and renovation projects.


Estimates the cost of projects; obtains bids and awards contracts for materials and services.


Supervises, performs and/or assists subordinates with building maintenance activities, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, mechanical and HVAC installation, maintenance and repair work; interior and exterior painting; general carpentry and renovation work; masonry; roofing repair, etc.


Supervises, performs and/or assists subordinates with grounds maintenance activities, including but not limited to installing and maintaining landscape materials, mowing grass, trimming trees and shrubbery, applying fertilizers and herbicides, raking leaves, removing debris, etc.

Minimum Training and Experience 

Requires high school diploma, GED and formal training, special courses or self-education that is equivalent to satisfactory completion of one year of college education or specialized advanced training.  Five years of experience along with a college degree is preferred.


Work Hours/Benefits


This is a permanent full time position Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00PM. Eighty hours of compensatory time may be accrued for hours worked over forty per week.  All county benefits such as health, dental, drug, life, retirement, 401(k), vacation and sick leave.




The pay grade assigned to this position is 72 with a salary range of $42,799 to $64,199.
