Veterans Honored in Bicentennial Parade

On Monday, May 26, Haywood County citizens lined the streets of downtown Waynesville to honor Haywood County’s veterans. Ronald Putnam, Haywood County Veterans Services Officer, says that the citizens of Haywood County have always been patriotic. He estimates that about 7,000 veterans live in Haywood County year-round and another 3,000 spend part of the year here. On June 2, in recognition of this successful Bicentennial event, the Haywood County Board of Commissioners presented certificates of appreciation to Putnam; and to Roy Pressley, State Veterans Affairs Commissioner, president of the Haywood County Veterans Council, and the Tar Heel Boys’ State Director of the American Legion for their leadership in the planning and coordination of the Memorial Day Parade.
