Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit: The Family and Children’s Services Program Area focuses on enhancing the welfare of the children in the county by promoting their physical safety, emotional, educational and social well-being. This is accomplished through coordination of services with other agencies, the court system and by a cooperative effort with all Title XX services.

Primary Purpose of the Position: The primary purpose of the Community Social Services Assistant involves counseling with abused/neglected/dependent children and their families. This employee provides training and assistance in household management, personal care and community living skills. Work involves: demonstrating, accompanying and working alongside clients to show them how to manage money, select and prepare nutritious and inexpensive meals, care for the family and/or the family’s personal health and cleanliness; discussing basic child rearing practices and discipline techniques; taking clients to medical, social and educational resources to assure they receive services; assisting clients in locating housing and furnishings; leading recreational activities, arranging for and/or providing transportation for family members to and from group homes, foster homes, day care, medical facilities, educational settings and other community resources. This employee also assists Social Work staff in maintaining records, proper documentation and other paperwork functions. This position is expected to alleviate some of the routine paperwork requirements imposed on the Social Work staff, thereby freeing their schedules for more direct client involvement and contact. This position is assigned to the Child Protective Services Intake Team.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Individual Training-Considerable knowledge of and skill in enlisting available community supportive resources for individuals served; considerable knowledge of social, economic, and environmental conditions of clients to be served; considerable knowledge of various types of housing and potential employers for skilled and non-skilled areas; skill in basic reading, writing, and simple mathematics; skill in appraising needs and exercising good judgment in decision-making; skill in establishing rapport with clients and variety of service delivery disciplines and community business personnel; ability to verbally communicate findings.

Minimum Education and Experience: Demonstrated possession of knowledges, skills, and abilities gained through two years of experience in performing similar instructional and community placement tasks; or graduation from a two-year associate degree program designed to prepare support personnel for human services agencies which includes a six month practice/internship in a similar setting (one year of the above experience may be substituted for the practice).

Additional Requirements: Applicants must submit official college transcripts if applicable. Applicants must have NC Driver’s License and access to a vehicle. The applicant must have a clean driving record with no more than three (3) points showing on current DMV record.
