General Description of Duties:

The purpose of these positions are to clean, feed and house animals in the shelter facility.  The individuals serving in these positions will maintain sanitary conditions in the cages, kennel areas and in all public areas of the facility.

Essential Tasks of Positions:

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in these positions.

  • Prepares food and feeds the animals in the shelter on a regular basis
  • Washes food and water bowls, shelter laundry, any shelter utensils and keeps facility sanitary
  • Greets and assists the public in adopting and retrieving animals
  • Answers telephones and performs other clerical duties as assigned
  • Cleans and disinfects cages and kennel areas
  • Administers medication to animals as directed
  • Performs other additional duties as assigned by the Animal Control Services Director

Hours of work/benefits:

These are temporary part-time positions and will work 19 hours per week.  Weekly schedule of work will vary upon facility needs.  County benefits are not available to these positions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required for the Positions:

  • Knowledge of basic cleaning and disinfectant procedures
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to work in a variety of temperatures and conditions

Minimum Education and Training Required for Positions:

High School Diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in a veterinary or related field.  Possession of valid driver's license.  Previous animal facility cleaning experience is required.

Additional Requirements for Positions:

Requires over one month and up to and including three months of office skills and working with the general public.  Requires the ability to communicate in a professional manner in oral and written form.

Special Certifications:

Must possess a valid NC Driver's license.  Current DMV record must show no more than three (3) points on record.


The successful candidates will be subject to a criminal background check.
