Soil and Water District Education

 

 

One student stands before a group of judges in Raleigh, delivering his award winning speech on watersheds...another searches through a container of river water, intently looking for the water insect whose presence indicates good water quality. A third student palms a handful of moist soil, then works it into a ribbon to determine what type of soil is located on this beautiful farmland...high on a mountainside at Cataloochee, several students stretch their arms around a massive tree trunk in an old growth forest, but still their fingers cannot touch…

The scenes above represent only a small percentage of moments we were privileged to share with Haywood County students in the past. Helping students to discover the wonders of this earth we live on, and along with it a commitment to stewardship, are among the most important things we do.

  • Lending Library (videos, DVD's on a variety of natural resource-related topics)

  • Land Judging Contest for high school students
  • Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) Camp for 8th and 9th graders
  • Poster Contest for 3rd, 4th & 5th graders
  • Essay Contest for 6th graders
  • Speech Contest for 7th and 8th graders
  • Enviroscape Demonstrations (all ages - water pollution)
  • Resource Conservation Workshop at NCSU
  • Workshops for teachers
    Haywood SWCD is pleased to join other agencies and organizations in the following projects:

  • Hay Field Day -- Sponsored by the Mountain Research Station, NC Department of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension Service and Haywood SWCD
