Bicycle Rodeo planned for May 14 Print

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Town of Clyde, Haywood County Recreation and Parks Department and BicycleHaywoodNC will conduct the 3rd Annual Bicycle Rodeo for youth ages 5-11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 14 at 64 Glance Street in Clyde.  Admission is free.

A parent or guardian will need to register their child for the bike course at the event.  If your child does not have a bike or helmet they can still participate. Bikes and helmets will be available in a variety of sizes.

As part of this event, children will be given an opportunity to ride their bicycles inside a specially-planned closed course. The course is designed to instill safe habits while biking, with an emphasis on sharpening skills involving stopping, starting, and controlling turns.

In addition to teaching basic safety and traffic skills, bicycle professionals from area bike shops will check your child’s bike and helmet for fit and safety.  Although this safety fair is focused toward teaching good habits to young bicycle riders, organizers have planned additional activities for enjoyment at every age.  The Town of Clyde will have a fire truck on hand to explore and a demonstration will be given by the Police Department’s K-9 Unit.  Prize drawings will be held at the conclusion of the event.

This year’s rodeo is being conducted in conjunction with the kickoff of the Haywood County Comprehensive Bicycle Plan, which will be developed through September of this year. Parents and children are encouraged to offer their thoughts on how we can plan for new and safer facilities for persons of all ages to enjoy bicycling. The Plan is being led by BicycleHaywoodNC and the Haywood County Recreation & Parks Department.

Free hotdogs and drinks will be offered by VVA following completion of the course. Join us for activities, food, and prize drawings on May 14th.  For more information please call Haywood County Recreation and Parks at 452-6789 or the Town of Clyde at 627-2566.
