Woodrow named new library director

Sharon Woodrow has been appointed the new director of the Haywood County Public Library.

Woodrow, who has served as Interim Director since December 2010, and as Assistant Director since 2007, was named permanently to the position on Tuesday by the Library Board of Directors.

“We think Sharon is very qualified with her strong financial background,” said Bette Sprecher, chair of the Library Board. “She is a very creative person, she is very civic-minded and she gets along well with people in the community and her staff. We think it is a very good marriage.”

Woodrow went to work for the library in 2001 after working for about two years in the Haywood County Finance Office. Prior to joining the County, she opened the first medical uniform shop in Waynesville. Prior to that, Woodrow worked at Paxar Corporation in Canton.

A Haywood County native, Woodrow graduated from Mars Hill College with a degree in Business Management. She expects to complete a Masters Degree in Library Science from Appalachian State University in May 2011.

Woodrow said she was honored to be named Library Director and is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“I feel that I can keep the library current given the ever-changing environment in library programming, services and technology,” Woodrow said. “Making sure that the library is relevant in the 21st Century is a high priority.”

Woodrow said her current projects include creating a teen area at the main library branch in Waynesville, working with the Historical and Genealogical Society to archive historical photos and documents, and working toward establishing an outreach collection for students who are homeschooled. She also hopes to reinstate the outreach that the library once offered to daycare centers.
