award-winning Board of Health Chair
Lynise Paschke

Lynise Paschke, chair of the Haywood County Board of Health since 2005, has received the prestigious Carl Durham Award, presented by the Association of North Carolina Boards of Health (ANCBH).

The award is given annually to an ANCBH member who has been an effective advocate for public health at local, regional and/or state levels. Haywood County Health Director Carmine Rocco, who nominated Paschke for the award, presented it to her during the Tuesday, Feb. 8 meeting of the Board of Health. He also read a proclamation from Robert Blackburn, ANCBH president, presented during the Ronald H. Levine Legacy Awards Luncheon held on January 28 in Raleigh.

The proclamation praised Paschke for working to improve public health by supporting an increase in the tobacco tax; and for guiding the Health Board through unique challenges such as the Solid Waste Rule, dental health issues, updating software and medical services to pregnant women.

Paschke, who lives in Canton and works as a pharmacist at Mission Hospital in Asheville, has served on the Board of Health for nine years. Rocco said he had found her professional guidance and counsel invaluable during his tenure with the health department. He particularly praised her leadership over the past year as the Health Board considered changes to and old Solid Waste Rule that received a large public response.

“Ms. Paschke demonstrated leadership and a willingness to provide ample public input,” Rocco said. “Lynise carefully considered the role of the Board to assess, address and assure this issue was properly handled. Our Board of Health members have had enough confidence in her leadership to elect her Chair for the last six years.”

In accepting the award, Paschke praised the Board of Health and the Health Department staff.

"I am honored to be recognized for my efforts to help promote public health in Haywood County,” Paschke said.  “I am very fortunate to have been able to work with Board Members, a Health Director, Management and Staff just as committed to protecting and improving the health of the citizens of Haywood County.  This truly should be a group award."
