January 5 is last day to pay 2010 property taxes on time Print

The final day to pay 2010 property taxes without a penalty is Wednesday, January 5, 2011. The Haywood County Tax Collections Office will be open each weekday until 4:45 p.m., with the exception of Monday, Jan. 3, when most county government offices will be closed in observance of New Year’s Day.

“The final week of the year is typically a very busy time for tax collections,” said David Francis, Haywood County Tax Collector. “We wanted to make sure that everyone who plans to pay during this time is aware of the holiday schedule. Those who don’t want to come into the office have the option of paying their taxes online with a credit card.”

For taxpayers who can’t afford to pay their property taxes all at once, Francis said it is still possible to arrange a payment schedule. All real property taxes must be paid in full by the end of May 2011. Taxpayers who do not pay by Jan. 5, or make payment arrangements with the Tax Collections office to avoid legal action, will incur a 2 percent penalty, with an additional ¾ percent added each month.

The Tax Collections Office is located on the second floor of the Historic Courthouse, 215 N. Main Street in Waynesville. To pay taxes online, go to the county website, www.haywoodnc.net, and click on Pay Taxes Online in the Main Menu.
