The Public Health Nurse I in the Haywood County Detention Facility Medical Unit provides professional nursing services

for inmates. Inmates frequently present with multiple health problems and require expert nursing assessment, planning,

intervention, and evaluation of their health problems. Health teaching, counseling, motivation of clients, and utilization of

community resources are major responsibilities. The PHN I conducts intake interviews, counsels and teaches clients, and

makes appropriate referrals.

Work Schedule:

The normal workweek is 40 hours, and may include weekend hours. DetentionFacility Medical Unit operates between the hours of

9:00am-5:00pm Monday through Friday. Special assignments as necessary may dictate altered hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities;

Knowledge of public health and nursing services are essential. Ability to relate well with people including clients of all ages, caregivers of clients, professional and clerical staff, and outside agencies.

 
Required Minimum Training: Gradu
ation from a four-year college or university with a BSN which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and one year of experience in Public Health Nursing; or graduation from an accredited school of professional nursing and two years of professional nursing experience including one year in public health or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Training/Experience:
License to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina. Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing desirable but is not required.
